There are a lot of forecasting models and servers which we can use to forecast weather and conditions.
Ever pilot usually have a preference in a specific model or a set of steps to acquire a relevant forecast.
MeteoBlue, XC Skies, Windy, NOAA, WindGuru are just a small part of the web services that provide us valuable information when doing forecasting for those ideal flying conitions.
In the last 3 years however there’s a website that re-worcks the standard for accurate forecasts.
SkySight.io is developed by the Australian glider pilot Mathew Scutter and has quickly made it self popular as one of the most accurate aviation forecast websites in Australia. Almost completely replacing the rather old RASP model for New South Wales Skysight is the main provider for forecasting services for the entire Gliding Federation of Australia.
Trust the model…
The fame of the Sky Sight accuracy grows quickly . In September 2018 SkySight is the official forecasting provider for stratospheric waves for the Perlan 2 mission. On 2-nd of September 2018 Perlan 2 reaches 23 203 meters above the El Calafate mountains after an amazingly accurate forecast for the strength and position from SkySight.
The website forecasting maps are now even getting integrated in the latest models of instruments from LX Nav, Naviter и LX Navigation. Direct map overlays are available over the navigation screens.
The site coverage till 2018 was limited to central Europe, South America and Australia. Since the beginning of 2019 the coverage slowly grew, covering Bulgaria and the Balkans since July 2019.
Forecasted thermal strength, cloudbase height, convergence lines, mountain waves, precipitation probability, winds, expected XC distance are only a few of the options that are available on the forecasting maps.
Some specifically valuable tools include:
- SKEW-T display for an area with a single mouse click..
- En-route forecasting.
- Local forecasts for specific coordinates and waypoints.
- Localized windgrams
The site service comes with a week of free trial period and at a price of 80 USD per year we still think it is one of the best options out there!
